The Chibok Project
These 276 sculptures were built to honor the abducted schoolchildren from Chibok, Nigeria in 2014. They were completed between 2018-2020. Arms lifted in hope, but also, a lament. For 3 years I struggled to make the girls, seated, and hunched, until I saw a picture of 82 freed girls, released in exchange for 5 Boko Haram members. Suddenly, I saw them as survivors, not victims, in their spirit of elation. As a survivor of domestic violence myself, I wanted to celebrate their strength, joy and resilience.
